What can I do if parents or carers leave the group or aren't interested in building relationships?
Session 2.1 · Note 3
When Parents Disengage or Leave
Parents and carers may leave our groups or just never seem to want to engage with us. It can leave us feeling frustrated. But that's normal and not a sign of failure.
Key Ideas
- Many parents and carers won't want to become part of church, and that's OK. They are trying it out. By being welcoming and open, you have already helped them see who God is and what a welcoming community church can be.
- There are many reasons why people leave groups - it might just be their circumstances rather than the content. Their kid may have a new group on at the same time, it's just one thing too many in a busy week, or they may have transport issues. If you can, find out why they've left and if there's anything you can do to help them stay.
- When parents and carers leave, if you can, keep in touch. It can be really helpful to ask for permission when people join your groups to stay in touch with them. Let them know what else is going on they might be interested in. Session 2 part 3 has more ideas for things you can invite parents and carers to.
