Starting Faith Conversations

It can sometimes feel difficult to know how to start conversations about God with parents and carers, particularly those who don't come to church regularly. Here are some ideas that might help.

Key Ideas

  • Remember that parents and carers who come to church groups will expect you to talk about God.
  • As you hear about people's lives, offering to pray is an easy next step.
  • You don't need to force God into the conversation - look for natural opportunities.
  • It gets easier the more you do it.

Top Tips from Others

  • It's so much easier to do in the context of a genuine relationship.
  • We say, if you'd like to know more about faith or God, I'd love to chat.
  • When you are talking about their kid, ask what would help them grow in their faith.
  • Offer a mum's Alpha or something similar straight after the toddler group.
  • Talk about God indirectly - for example, sharing stories about a time he helped you.
  • Create windows into your relationship with God - for example, saying what a beautiful day it is and that you found yourself telling God what a great job he did as you walked there that morning.
