Teaching Creating Windows
The core idea at the heart of Key Tool of Creating Windows is giving someone else a glimpse of your relationship with God. It is a powerful tool because it taps into how we often learn about life - observing other people. We learn from things they say, for example, ‘This new spin class is amazing! I feel so much stronger’ and from things you observe: ‘I saw Andy powerwalking along the canal today and thought I might have a go’. You can create a window using a story, a comment or by letting someone watch you and God together.
Parents and carers will understand more about a relationship with God when you create windows into your own relationship with God. It also models for them how they could give their kids a glimpse of their own relationship with God. When children and teens get glimpses of others’ relationship with God it gives them ideas and possibilities for how they might do life with God themselves.
Key Ideas
- Some examples of what you might do:
- You can tell a story about how your relationship with God works: ‘I was feeling a bit overwhelmed last week, so I took 5 minutes to chat with God and that grounded me’.
- You can explain how God’s involved your life: ‘I was chatting to God about what craft to do and he reminded me about that origami bird – so that’s what we’re doing’ or ‘I find it much easier to pray when I’m outside walking.’
- Let them see you and God. It’s really powerful to see someone worshipping or letting themselves connect with God in prayer and helps people know what to do. For example, if you pray out loud in the group, pray as you would at home, using ordinary language.
- You can also invite people to create windows into their relationship with God for others: for example:
- If you’ve had the story of Daniel, ask people to share any stories of times when God rescued them.
- If you’re talking about the power of the bible, ask people to share their favourite bible story and why it’s their favourite
- If you’ve thought about how God is close to us, invite people to share stories of what that feels like for them.
