Teaching Unwinding
Unwinding is the third Key Tool. Unwinding is all about helping people get an accurate and broad picture of who God is. We can sometimes have a narrow or warped view of God - for example, that he is far away - and we can help people correct any warped views and broaden their understanding of who God is. In church groups, you are less likely to be correcting unbalanced views but can give people a broad and balanced view of him in the Bible stories you choose, the things you say and the songs you sing.
Here are some ideas to help you use and share the Key Tool of Unwinding:

- Think about the Bible stories you use in your sessions. Over time, do they tell the whole story of God and us? Do they give a one-sided view of God e.g. focussing on his power or his comfort? Are they from both the Old and New Testaments? This article on telling the whole story may be helpful.
- Think about the songs you sing. Songs are a powerful way for people to learn about God and we remember them. What are the messages they are giving about God? We have ideas here for picking songs that provide a balanced view of God.
- Try to create a culture where it’s OK to wonder about God rather than having the ‘right’ view of him.
